And the winner is...

The 2010 Joanne Champion Granger Scholarship winner is David Heaton of Frontier Central High School in Hamburg, New York. His winning submission deals with vacant housing in Buffalo and possible solutions to this problem. It is part of HOME's mission to create housing opportunities and this submission resonates with our mission. David  Heaton will be presented with the scholarship and the award at HOME's 47th Annual Meeting and Dinner on Thursday, April 29th. Congratulations, David!

The scholarship committee received many applications, some of which stood out from the rest. The committee would like to give special recognition to two Honorable Mentions:

Elizabeth Herr of Kenmore East High School submitted an essay that shows her determination to revitalize Buffalo as well as illustrates her life experiences in travelling to Kenya, which changed her point of view to be more humanitarian in nature. She aspires to return to Kenya to aid in building a nursery school at a local village.

Shannon Toscano of Mount Saint Mary Academy submitted an essay that thoughtfully weaves her personal philosophy of helping others to the best of her abilities while treating each individual as an equal, and her voluntary experiences fundraising for programs in various countries around the world.

HOME would like to thank all applicants for their submissions and wish all applicants good luck in their future endeavors as they graduate from high school!
