HOME Honors its Founding Generation, Launches Fair Housing Legacy Society

Launches Fair Housing Legacy Society

By Stephen Karnath, Esq. and David Wright

At its core, HOME has always been about people throughout Western New York expressing their commitment to a community free from housing discrimination.

HOME’s rich legacy, dating back to 1963, was created by countless individuals who took the stand that discrimination in our community must not be tolerated.  Over four decades later it is time to honor everyone who has contributed to this legacy and establish a fund to ensure that this legacy continues.

In late 2004, the Development Committee of HOME’s Board of Directors formally created the Fair Housing Legacy Society and began contacting members of HOME’s “founding generation” – members of HOME that have the distinction of having supported fair housing for over twenty years.

Three of HOME’s most dedicated members and ardent supporters, Art Butler, Liz Clark and George Hezel, have joined the effort to establish the Fair Housing Legacy Society to honor and recognize HOME’s members and supporters who choose to make gifts to HOME as part of their insurance, retirement or estate planning.

Art Butler, HOME’s Honorary President, offered his motivation for signing on to this effort: “Housing Opportunities Made Equal started as a small volunteer commitment on all of our parts.   It gradually became a lifetime commitment.  Now, with the establishment of the Fair Housing Legacy Society, our commitment to fair and equal housing opportunity will continue beyond our lifetimes.”

With the creation of the Fair Housing Legacy Society, we are confident that HOME can build upon the core group of members who have already included HOME in their estate plans.

Legacies can be contributed to HOME’s general fund to support ongoing fair housing services or can be designated for the John Howland Koekkoek Endowment for Fair Housing Education where it will be used to support HOME's programs  and publications that raise the public's awareness and understanding of issues that impact everyone's right to live in a community free from discrimination.

HOME is very grateful for the years of support from its founding generation and its entire loyal and devoted membership.  We hope that everyone will seriously consider becoming a member of the Fair Housing Legacy Society, especially members of HOME’s “Founders’ Generation.”

For more information on joining the Fair Housing Legacy Society or contributing to the Koekkoek Endowment, please contact HOME at 854-1400.  Information about planned giving is also available through LEAVE A LEGACY Western New York at their website at www.leavealegacywny.org.

Stephen Karnath, of the NY State Division of Housing and Community Renewal, chairs HOME’s Development Committee.
