Bayard Rustin perhaps said it best: “It
is up to us the living to realize Dr. King’s dream...We owe it to his
memory and to our future.” This quote is on a 20 foot banner which
frames HOME’s exhibit highlighting the history of the fight for civil
rights which will be on display in CEPA Gallery’s first floor gallery
from January 13th to the 27th. HOME is honored to
be able to work with this world-renowned Gallery to bring this display
to the public and to collaborate on an event to celebrate Dr. King’s
legacy.
On Thursday January 20th HOME
and CEPA invite you to a free evening of art, performance, music and
free refreshments in the first floor gallery and the spectacular atrium
of one of Buffalo’s architectural treasures, the Market Arcade
building. Located at 617 Main Street, the building is just down the
street from HOME.
Doors open at 5:00 for a chance to mingle
with old and new friends, enjoy some food, and see the display. At
6:00, we will feature an interactive performance by the HOME Players,
HOME’s improvisational theatre company. Friend of HOME Frank Messiah,
President of the Buffalo NAACP, will say a few words and then you won’t
be able to resist dancing to the music of Allentown band Dimetrodon. The
MC for the evening is none other than the goddess of nighttime radio
herself, WBFO’s Debbie Sims.
Young adults and those young at heart are
encouraged to join us for free food and drinks and the company of people
working for change in our community. Come learn more about fair
housing, the means of combating discrimination and Housing Opportunities
Made Equal. Learn how you can join the only organization in Western New
York that since 1963 has offered comprehensive services to victims of
housing discrimination.
If you are tired of being defined by
society’s image of who you are, or if you are looking for a way to renew
your dedication to the fight for civil rights, join us Thursday, January
20th at CEPA Gallery at 617 Main Street. After all, what
better way to celebrate the dreamer’s legacy?
Poet, teacher, and essayist June Jordan reminds us that “We
are the one’s we’ve been waiting for.” Together, we can put an end to
the segregation in our communities and ensure equal rights in housing
for everyone.
