New On Board

 By David Wright

This year HOME warmly welcomes five new board members.  Each new board member has a unique range of skills and abilities that will help further the mission of HOME.

Mary Ellen Brockmyre is the Director of Funding and Program Development for Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled and has 20 years of experience working with and for the developmentally disabled population.  She is a former board member of the Black Rock Riverside NHS, and has served on two school boards.

Diana Cooke teaches special education for the Buffalo Public Schools.  She has her Masters of Science in special education from D’Youville College and a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Empire State College.  She wants to be a HOME Board member so that she can make a positive impact on the Buffalo housing situation.  Among other skills and perspectives, Ms. Cooke brings marketing and computer technology skills to the Board.  She is also an accomplished pianist.

Linda R. Hassberg, Esq. is an attorney with Lipsitz, Green, Fahringer, Roll, Salisbury & Cambria LLP.  After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University at Buffalo School of Law she clerked for US District Court Judge Curtin and practiced disability rights and discrimination law with Bouvier O'Connor.  Later she joined the Western New York Law Center as a public interest lawyer where she worked closely with HOME on the Comer litigation.

Leah R. Mervine, returns to the board after serving as HOME’s Coordinator of Development and Member Relations. Ms. Mervine currently attends the State University at Buffalo where she is earning her Juris Doctor and Master of Social Work. She says, "The Civil Rights Movement was a time where brave and bold people used the law to further social justice, HOME carries this legacy into my generation and I am honored to have a stake in this venture."

Yvette Veira works for the University at Buffalo's Research Institute as a Project Director and is a past client of HOME.  Ms. Veira has volunteered for service with the National Inner City Youth Organization and the Buffalo Zoological Gardens.  She is active in community service and is interested in program and workshop development. Of her commitment to HOME, she says, “I believe that HOME is a very important organization, and would like to help further the mission of HOME in the community. It is great to know that an organization like HOME does exist to help those who face housing discrimination even in this new millennium.”
