On April 18, 2002, supporters of fair housing will gather at HOME’s Annual
Meeting and Dinner to celebrate HOME’s 39th year of service to
the Buffalo Niagara Region. Even before the federal government passed the
Fair Housing Act and New York State codified the Human Rights laws against
housing discrimination, a group of concerned clergy and laypersons had
come together to take a stand against the pervasive housing discrimination
in the area. Out of that effort, Housing Opportunities Made Equal, Inc.
(HOME) was birthed.
Since its inception, HOME has been in the forefront of the struggle for
fair housing by offering aid to victims of housing discrimination. In
addition, HOME’s community education programs have provided valuable
information about fair housing laws to tens of thousands of area
residents.
HOME has counseled thousands of landlords and tenants about their rights
and responsibilities and has helped to resolve countless housing disputes.
HOME also provides technical assistance to government agencies, other
human service agencies and housing providers. In 1999, HOME was chosen in
partnership with the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers to
administer the Greater Buffalo Community Housing Center, a program
designed to expand the housing opportunities of Section 8 recipients.
Entertainment for HOME’s Annual Meeting will be provided by the Hutchinson
Family Revival, under the direction of Richard Price. The group will be
recreating the celebrated 19th Century family singing group
with songs about abolition, suffrage and civil rights.
The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner will be served
at 6:00 p.m. There will then be a brief business meeting during which new
board members and officers will be elected, followed by the Hutchinson
Revival and the presentation of the Joanne Champion Granger Scholarship
and other awards.
HOME’s Annual Meeting and Dinner, sponsored by HSBC Bank USA, will be held
at Rich Renaissance Niagara and is open to the public. Ticket prices
remain unchanged from last year at $35 (or $50 for patrons). For ticket
information call Margaret Brown at 854-1400. Reservations must be made
by
April 8, 2002.
Hope you will join us as we celebrate 39 years of continuous civil rights
service. |
